Highlights
Highlights are happy things you see and do, and special times you share with others
When families encourage and practise the Happy Highlights concept at home and in their relationships, wonderful things can happen!
A highlight is any simple pleasure, joyful moment or positive feeling we can experience on any day. Highlights help us feel good. If we can fully experience and fully appreciate the simple joys that are available to most of us on any given day, we can train our brains to find more highlights and move toward a more positive default of appreciation and connection.
The 7 sources of Highlights, according to Dr. Terry Orlick:
· Play/physical activity
· Human connection
· Nature
· Relaxation
· Personal discovery
· Positive sensations
· Accomplishment
Ideas for integrating the PLS Highlights concept into your family life:
• Breakfast or dinner: Make it a family tradition to once a day share 3-5 highlights of the day you have just experienced or the night or day you are looking forward to
• Sharing highlights amongst family members over a meal is a powerful way for families to positively connect and enhance a shared positive outlook
• When children have nothing to do encourage them to create their own Highlight games. For example, think of new ways to teach people about highlights, to encourage their friends to share highlights, to reflect on and record their highlights
· Children can create their own Highlight treasure Hunt, which can be played inside or outside - set a time for 10 minutes and have all family members either individually or in pairs scan the environment for any highlights. Participants can take photos or just report back. Remember highlights can be as big as a rainbow or as small as a smile. You can create a family highlights vision board or children can start their highlights journal
• Encourage your children to think of people in their lives they could make a positive comment to and thereby giving the other person a highlight moment
• Encourage your family to regularly share at least one thing you each love, appreciate, value or respect about each other or appreciate about your family, friends, teacher etc
• Encourage your children to share with you something they like or are proud about within themselves
• Children and family members could play Highlights charades, choosing their highlights from one of the 7 sources of highlights each day
